Poor BKB (Barefoot KenBob) got rash on his forehead including swollen eye.  The doctor said that it’s herpes zoster (shingles) and is chicken pox virus (which stays in the body after infection as child). Ken is taking antiviral (Acyclovir) for 5 days.

Mother’s Day

by: cathy No Gravatar

Cathy standing behind her mother, JulieOn Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 10, 2009), in the morning, my parents took me out with my two sisters, one brother-in-law, and my hubby. But I had no idea what my parents wanted me to do. They did let me know to wear nice dress.

After we arrived Chinese Culture Center, El Monte.   OMG (Oh My Gosh) My father and sister told me that I would have to honor to my mother on the stage with other mothers and their children.  In the backstage when closing the curtain, the guides and speakers explained what they do. But I did not understand them because they spoke Chinese.  Only a few people there spoke English to me.

All the mothers sat on chairs, on stage, with one of their children standing behind chair.  When the curtain opened, many cameras flashed. but I understood that their familes took pictures including my father, my brother in law, and my hubby.

After the speakers announced about the first mother, then my mother (second eldest mother) stood up from chair and I saw a picture of my mother on the screen.

After announced last mother, all children on stage (including me) gave their mothers bouquets.  Still more camera flashes!!!! Of course it was so hot for me!!  Speakers and leaders gave each mother awards with the child.  Then took posed pictures of us!!

OC Marathon

by: cathy No Gravatar

On Sunday, May 3, 2009, after I completed Orange Country Marathon, I felt like this was my first marathon, even though I have completed 22 marathons before.  I broke my leg last year and had only trained up to 22 miles two weeks before that day.  Plus before that, I got sick (sore throat, cold and cough at least one week)

Anyway, after my hubby, Ken and I rode the shuttle from Orange County Fairground to Fashion Island Mall, we started near back of the crowd with Barefoot Julian.  After starting , I stopped at Ruby’s restaurant for bathroom.  About 5 females participants waited in the line, the manager gave us free breakfast coupons.

After bathroom, I saw the cops (both motorcycles and vehicles with sirens) following the last participants including me and they told us to use on sidewalk. Until turned right to Corona Del Mar. I could see that many participants waited in longest line at the first porta-potty.  When out of Corona Del Mar, I was not last participant because the cops did not chase me.

In the first few miles, I felt my quads sore because I competed sprint triathlon at Ken’s work (CSULB) as I biked on a big steep hill four times (4 laps) then a few days later trained to run on a couples steep hills, Signal Hill with women’s triathlon club.  Anyway  Later about half hour, my quad pain was gone.

Nice scenic through Newport Back Bay trails (note: the Back Bay was the final leg of the first OC marathon course).  About 12 miles was split half marathon and full marathon, I looked to see if any participants continued the full marathon. If I was only full-marathon participant, I would turn to finish the half marathon, even though I had signed up for the full marathon. I decided to continue and run the full marathon.

Nice to explore around South Coast Plaza shopping mall.  After out of the mall, many drivers complained because the roads were closed for the marathon runners.

About 20 miles, my upper thigh (hamstring) cramped. I had to walk easy on the Santa Ana River path. After 21 miles the guy in van had caught up with me, and warned me and other slow participants that he would cut us.  About 5 minutes later 4 participants passed me quickly. I looked back. I was aware that the guy in the van chased us.  Obviously, he already cut slowest participants (note:  the marathon limited 7.5 hours to finish). The 4 participants and I were positive to finish the marathon.  Anyway after the river and finish running through Fairview park, I felt ready to walk fast or run, and I passed many slower participants. When I crossed the streets, the cops stopped vehicles to let us cross the road. I arrived OC fairground, and I felt to be ready to run in the final half mile to finish. I saw Ken cheering for me. Short time before crossing the finish line, the announcer, Rudy, called out my name and waved at me, because he knew me and my hubby (Barefoot Ken Bob) from several other marathons. I finished less than 7 hours.

I have also signed up for Los Angeles Marathon on Memorial Day, only three weeks from now (Note: the Los Angeles Marathon usually is in early March and I hope it will change to March again next year)

My First 5K Race Kiddin’ ???

by: cathy No Gravatar

I have not competed in any running or triathlon since Los Angeles Marathon last March. I fell in the stairs at my brother’s house in Florida and broke my right ankle last spring. Of course I had to cancel any events (both running and triathlon) I had planned, because I was stuck in Florida until the summer. My orthopedic surgeons/doctors ordered me not to travel.

I was in Florida, because my brother got serious illness, including severe stroke last December, just before Christmas. He was unable to walk or talk. Now he improves a lot as walks with walker/cane and talks a few words.

My hubby, Barefoot Ken Bob and our big baby, Herman (my real big dog) drove to my brother’s place (as he had planned before my broken ankle) and stayed there until July. We drove back home starting mid-July, visiting a few other friends and family along the way.

Back here in Southern California, my local orthopedic doctor said my ankle bone was 100% recovered after Labor Day and allowed me to run again.

Painful!! But worse after I got out of crutches after 10 weeks (wore hard cast 7 weeks). Also the doctors did not allow me to compete any marathon until next year.

So, the Rose Bowl 5K on Saturday, December 13, 2008 was my first race since I broke my ankle.

Subtitles on Aircraft Carriers

by: Barefoot Ken Bob No Gravatar

I am hearing. My wife is deaf. Still, myself, and many other hearing folks, I know, also enjoy captioning with our video programs. It helps us “hear” better, when folks whisper, or speak with strong accents, or when there is other noise interference, either in the program, or from our listening environment (noisey neigbors, noisey machinery, noisey airplanes, etc.)

Both, Cathy and I have signed the petition “Subtitles on all Aircraft Carriers.”. We ask you to sign this petition to help reach the goal of 10,000 signatures. We care deeply about this cause, and hope you will support our efforts.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/subtitlesonairlines

Target: Airline Companies

Sponsored by: Kenny DeHaan

Several people within the Deaf Community have brought up the issue that airlines do not put subtitles on TV shows and movies. Deaf and Hard-Of-Hearing people make up a great number of the Airline’s customers. We travel a lot so we should be given the same consideration by the airlines as hearing customers. Is it fair, ethical that we have to sit through our long flights, unable to understand whatever is on while hearing customers are able to enjoy the services to the fullest. We have waited a long time for this change to happen and now it is time to become proactive. Sure the ADA law has taken care of us in some situations, but shouldnt ADA Title III: Public Accommodations apply to this situation also (http://www.ada.gov/cguide.htm)? Why not be heard, Im sure I speak on the behalf of the Deaf and Hard-Of-Hearing community when I say that we would love to have subtitles on all Aircraft Carriers. I welcome not just the United States but the world, people who fly need subtitles, come and sign this petition.
